As California welcomes more than one million fans for this summer’s soccer championship, the excitement won’t stop at the stadium gates, but the pace can.
Whether you’re catching matches at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles or Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Ventura County Coast is the perfect place to unwind once the games are done. Linked by Highway 101, its four coastal communities– Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo and Port Hueneme– offer space to breathe, explore and experience real California without the crowds.
Here’s how to spend your time between match days.
Skip the Overcrowded Host Cities
You don’t have to stay in the middle of it all to feel part of the action.
Just 52 miles (about a 90-minute drive) from SoFi Stadium, Ventura County Coast offers a scenic, more accessible alternative to traditional host-city stays. It’s Southern California for more space and less gridlock. Here, mornings start with coffee by the harbor and end with sunsets over the Pacific.
Locals surf uncrowded breaks, hike oak-shaded canyons and wander walkable downtowns filled with independent shops and galleries. Connected by Highway 101, Pacific Coast Highway and rail, it’s easy to catch a match by day and unwind by ocean at night.
For a more relaxed journey, the Pacific Surfliner runs along the coast between Los Angeles and Ventura County, offering a scenic, lower stress alternative to driving– but it will take more time.
Beyond its natural beauty, Ventura County Coast stays grounded, trading pretense for genuine connection, with family-run businesses, bilingual hospitality and a welcoming, inclusive community that makes visitors feel at home quickly.
Explore Nature without the Crowds

As an LA native, I once read that 2 million tourists hike just one of Hollywood’s most known hiking trails each year. Meanwhile, Ventura County Coast is the gateway to some of California’s most stunning landscapes– places the locals escape to when they actually want to breathe.
Just offshore lies Channel Islands National Park, often called the “Galapagos of the United States.” Accessible via Island Packers Cruises, this protected marine sanctuary spans five islands and offers dolphin sightings, sea caves and unmatched coastal views– without the crowds found in many of California’s other national parks.
Closer to shore, Ventura County Coast’s harbors invite exploration by kayak, paddleboard or sunset cruise. Visitors can take surf lessons from local instructors who’ve grown up riding these waves or head inland to the Ventura County side of the Santa Monica Mountains for panoramic hikes just minutes from the beach.
Local Tip: Early-summer brings California’s “June Gloom,” a soft marine layer that burns off by midday. While we recommend packing a light jacket, rest assured the mild coastal weather keeps sightseeing comfortable and offers a cool, welcomed escape from inland heat.

Ventura County Coast’s dining scene reflects its unique diversity, from modern Mediterranean plates at Stephen’s Market and Grill to European-inspired fare at Cafe Ficelle and Immigrant Son Caffe.
Downtown Ventura’s craft breweries and ocean-view tasting rooms bring people together, pouring everything from small-batch IPAs to coastal wines that pair perfectly with fresh seafood. Live music venues and laid back bars create an easy space to unwind, where visitors can linger, connect and toast the day’s matches under string lights and pink skies. Here, happy hour often turns into dinner, because no one’s in a rush to leave.
And for a taste of tradition, Oxnard’s Taco Trail is a must–a self-guided journey through family-run taquerias and food trucks celebrating Ventura County’s Mexican heritage.
In Camarillo, the scene leans local and laid back, with small tasting rooms like Camarillo Barrel Works, home of Flat Fish Brewing Co. and Cantara Cellars, alongside neighborhood wine spots like Sheila’s Wine Bar & Cafe.
For something fun and unexpected, House of Bamboo brings a tropical, tiki-style twist to Old Town– colorful, immersive and one of the few late-night spots in the area. Twisted Oak Tavern rounds things out with craft cocktails and elevated pub classics, prepared with locally sourced ingredients.
You can also find spots like Lola Betty’s Kitchen, a local favorite for authentic Filipino comfort food that adds to the area’s growing mix of global flavors.
Port Hueneme quietly surprises with its own mix of Asian flavors, from ramen and Hawaiian BBQ at Kung Foo Noodles to long-time local favorites like Pho Saigon and Mandarin House, plus Korean-inspired options like Poke Ramen. With several restaurants clustered along W. Channel Islands Boulevard, it’s easy to explore a range of cuisines just minutes from one of the area’s most calm, uncrowded beaches.
Enjoy delicious seafood on the sand at Surfside Seafood, then walk it off on the Port Hueneme Pier.
Experience Sports Culture with Coastal Energy
Ventura County Coast has long been part of Southern California’s sports culture, blending athletic energy with a laid-back coastal setting.
Oxnard’s Dallas Cowboys Training Camp brings NFL excitement to the region each summer, while events like Camarillo’s California Strawberry Cup Youth Soccer Tournament Wings Over Camarillo Air Show highlight the areas range from youth sports to large-scale community events. Ventura’s Mountains 2 Beach Marathon and Half and many other competitions, further showcasing the region’s passion for performance and play.
We’re also home to Ventura County FC, the region’s first professional soccer team and the LA Galaxy’s MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, bringing global football energy to our stretch of the coast.
While Ventura County Coast may not be hosting matches this year, it continues to build its reputation as California’s next stage for sports and a destination that offers space to recharge between the high-energy moments happening across the state this summer.
