You can’t go to any beach along Ventura County Coast without seeing at least one person stand-up paddleboarding. It’s gained a ton of popularity over the years and has a long, captivating history. It all started in ancient Polynesia. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) was originally used for fishing, travel, and cultural traditions. Eventually, it became a recreational sport in the 1990s and is a popular training method surfers use to get in shape. In fact, SUP can burn up to 400 calories per hour.

The best part is that people of all skill levels can do it. This low-impact workout gives you a whole new view of the Ventura County Coast from the water. From our protected harbors to our year-round perfect weather, you couldn’t have picked a better activity to dive into during your weekend getaway.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding

What size SUP board is right for me?

I had no idea there were so many options when I first started. Finding the right rental place was key to helping me decide (but more on this later). What you should really be asking is: What kind of activity do I want to do with my paddleboard? Each SUP option is built for different scenarios, from surfing and yoga to recreational touring.

My Personal Recommendation

Personally, I love the inflatable stand up paddleboards because it’s easier to hop around when my husband and I do a little staycation from Oxnard to Ventura. You can never go wrong with an all-around board, though. They’re a bit wider, so you can take your time to establish balance. Once you find a rental place, they’ll give you the best recommendation.

Stand-Up Paddle Board: Where to rent and get lessons

It’s a little intimidating when you first dip your toe in the water (literally). For me, it felt like everyone already knew how to stand up paddleboard, and I was late to the party, but finding the right instructor was essential. Focus SUP Hawaii Ventura is a great option for first-timers who want a personal experience. Kathrin is the co-owner and an instructor with a calm, reassuring teaching style that can help anyone feel confident on the water. If you love yoga, they have a great class you can do on your board, too.

Best Spots for Stand-Up Paddleboarding

You can’t go wrong with any of these places, but I do have some favorites, like Channel Islands Harbor; you get to see more marine life there. Before you go off paddling into the sunset, make sure to check the conditions. We have year-round great weather, but knowing the tide and wind forecast is important. Also, don’t forget to show respect to fellow water neighbors and marine life. Keeping enough distance is always best practice.
