Book Your Stay
It’s officially 2026, and the best way to set the tone for this next chapter is with some rest and recovery. Whether you’re setting aside time to manifest your goals or catching a break before the whirlwind starts back up again, Ventura County Coast is the perfect place to escape.
Around this time of year, our local cities, Camarillo, Port Hueneme, Ventura, and Oxnard, are noticeably less crowded. That means more opportunities for you to explore like a local and experience the sights at your own pace. I like to take advantage of the lower hotel rates, too. My husband and I usually book our staycations now before getting back to the grind.
So set your calendar! These spots are perfect for a micro getaway during the week.
Know before you go tip: Pack layers. It’s still sunny this time of year, but a little cooler than usual in the evenings.
Things to do Monday-Thursday in Ventura County Coast
Day 1: Ventura & the Harbor
Head over to downtown Ventura for breakfast at Caje Coffee Roasters. The ambiance is classic California beach bungalow with amazing coffee, delicious acai bowls, and savory bagel sandwiches.
When you’re done, stroll down Main Street and do some window shopping at the locally-owned shops. Plum Gift Boutique has an eclectic mix of home goods, baby gifts, and even plants. We stopped by to get our yearly Christmas ornament just a few weeks ago.
Don’t forget to stop by Ventura Harbor Village. It’s a charming seaside town with plenty of shopping and dining options. They also have some live music events coming up that are really fun.
Day 2: Channel Islands National Park
Island Packers are pros when it comes to exploring this national park. They offer a range of activities, like day trips to the surrounding islands. You can take a boat ride from Ventura Harbor and it’s often an all-day experience from 8 AM to 4 PM.
I highly recommend the excursion to Anacapa Island. Conditions can vary, so you’re not guaranteed to land on the island but seeing the dramatic cliffs, sea caves, and birdwatching is worth it. Remember to book your round-trip tickets ahead of time.
If whale watching is more your thing, this is the perfect time of year to catch a sighting. Round-trip boats cruise through the Santa Barbara Channel to spot gray whale migration. The Island Packers guides share insights on whale behavior, migration patterns, and marine conservation so it’s educational and fun.
Please note, the islands are a biodiverse sanctuary (also known as the Galapagos of North America). Be as respectful as possible and leave no trace behind.
Day 3: Oxnard Dunes
Truly a hidden gem, the Oxnard Dunes has picturesque grassy hills and unbelievably soft sand.
‘oloÅ‚koy Beach Park, formerly known as Oxnard Beach Park, has been named the number one Best Beach on the West Coast by USA Today’s 10 Best in their 2023, 2024, and 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s perfect for long, quiet walks. Some iconic movies and shows were made here, too, like Spartacus, Big Little Lies, and more.
Our best sunsets happen in winter so be ready to snap a few pics as you admire the scenery. Feeling adventurous? There are plenty of kayaking and scuba diving excursions around Oxnard.
After a long day of exploring, head over to the Lookout Bar & Grill. It’s got old sailor vibes with views of the marina. If you order a Bloody Mary, be prepared for lots of garnish!
Day 4: Camarillo
Take a stroll in Old Town Camarillo for some window shopping and quick bites. My husband and I usually meet up with friends at Topa Topa Brewing Co. and soak up some sun. Their outdoor seating is great for large parties and pets. Our dog, Milo, is usually by our side, nibbling on pizza crumbs.
If there’s anything you need to stock up on, Camarillo Premium Outlets is super close by. They have the best prices on name-brand clothes, accessories, and home goods. Pottery Barn recently opened up and I always stop by to get gifts for friends or treat myself to something for the house.
Quick hot spots before you go
The best part about visiting the Ventura County Coast during the winter is that the weather can’t be beat. You can still do so many outdoor activities with the family and pets. Plus, saving on your stay makes a big difference around this time of year since it’s our off-season.
Welcome 2026 with a clear head and a full heart as you explore all the sights without the crowds.
