We love Ventura County Coast, but we’re not the only ones! Find out what makes this area so special from people who live in the “Local Vibe” spotlight. They’ll share their favorite places to eat, shop, and play as well as tips on what to bring when you visit.
Meet: The Island Scrub Jay
What is your name? Hi there! I’m the Island Scrub-Jay—an electric-blue bird native to Santa Cruz Island. I’m actually the only bird species found only on one of the Channel Islands, which makes me super special. And that means I have the smallest range of any North American bird species! Some might say I’m the unofficial ambassador of Santa Cruz Island.
Do you have nickname? If so what is it?
Some call me “Blue” or “Jay,” but I respond best to the sound of acorns (my favorite snack!). Locals say my bold personality and bright color make me unforgettable—so even without a nickname, I stand out.
Did you grow up here or end up here? I was born right here on Santa Cruz Island, and my entire species is island-raised. Our ancestors flew over from the mainland thousands of years ago and settled in for good. Over time, we became bigger, bolder, and brighter than our mainland relatives—it’s just the island way of doing things!

Island Information
How do you get to the Islands?
While I prefer flying, humans can hop on a boat or ferry and enjoy the stunning ocean wildlife. Once you arrive on Santa Cruz Island, keep your eyes peeled—I might be hanging out in the oaks, or maybe I’ll be perched up high, enjoying the breeze.
What are some mindful practices for visitors when they meet you?
There are a few thoughtful practices we’d love for visitors to keep in mind:
1: Don’t feed the birds: I’m clever and curious, but human snacks mess with my natural diet and instincts.
2: Stay on trails: That way you won’t step on young oak saplings or disturb nesting areas.
3: Use quiet voices: I like singing, but I also enjoy peace and calm. Let nature be the loudest thing you hear.
4: Respect the trees: I rely on oak trees to survive—please don’t damage branches or carve into bark.
5: Leave no trace: Pack out all trash and respect the fragile island ecosystem.
Fun Things About You
What is your favorite thing about Ventura County Coast?
I love how wild and diverse the landscape is—from coastal cliffs to oak woodlands. It’s the perfect place for acorn gathering and a good view. I hear people love the hiking trails and wildlife as much as I do, which makes me proud of my home.
If someone is planning a visit to Ventura County Coast, what are five things you recommend they pack for the trip?
- Binoculars (for birdwatching, of course!)
- Reusable water bottles
- Trail snacks in reusable containers
- Comfortable hiking shoes
- A field journal to record cool animal sightings
What is your favorite restaurant in Ventura County Coast?
I dine al fresco—on acorns, insects, and the occasional snake—but I hear humans love the cozy spots at Ventura Harbor Village. While I wouldn’t trade my crunchy acorns for calamari, I totally get the appeal. Just don’t leave crumbs!
What’s the best thing on the menu?
For me? A hearty stash of island acorns, stored safely for winter. But for you, I’d recommend the local halibut or grilled veggie wraps—colorful and crunchy!

Please explain your perfect day in Ventura County Coast.
Start with a morning hike through the oak woodlands of Santa Cruz Island—my favorite neighborhood. I’m usually out and about with my lifelong mate, as us scrub jays are known to stick together for life—talk about lovebirds! Midday, take a break near Scorpion Anchorage to enjoy a peaceful ocean breeze. In the afternoon, watch me and my feathered friends swoop through the trees (I recommend binoculars!). Finish your day with a sunset boat ride back to the mainland while looking out for dolphins and sea lions.
