Cool summer spots can be hard to find during the dog days of summer, but Ventura County Coast is an exception. Just a 20-minute drive inland can raise the temperature by up to 20 degrees, but here along the coast, misty mornings turn into sunny afternoons, refreshed by a gentle ocean breeze. This might sound too good to be true, this perfect weather is all thanks to the marine layer.
What is the Marine Layer?
The marine layer forms when warm air interacts with California’s cool ocean waters, making the heated air cool and dense which ultimately forms low lying clouds and mist. This cool layer of air becomes trapped between the ocean/ground surface and the warm air above. The result is a cool mist that accumulates within the mountain ranges that surround our coast. Throughout the day the warm sun evaporates the marine layer giving way to sunny, breezy weather in the afternoon. In general, when the weather gets hot inland, Ventura County Coast cools down making it one of the best places with cool summer temperatures to visit.
